This study aims to determine and analyze the influence of Environmental Concern, Environmental Knowledge, and Perceived Value on Purchase Intention. This is a survey research with the data collection tool used as a questionnaire. The population of this study is the potential consumers of green products in social commerce Instagram. The data sources in this study are primary data from 110 respondents using purposive sampling. The criteria for respondents in this research are potential consumers who are active on social commerce Instagram, potential consumers who intend to buy green products on social commerce Instagram, and potential consumers who know about green products. This research is done with a multiple linear regression method. The study results conclude that: i) Environmental awareness, environmental knowledge, and perceived value have a significant effect on purchase intention, ii) Environmental awareness has a positive and significant influence on purchase intention, and iii) Environmental knowledge has a positive and significant influence. On purchase intention, iv) Perceived value positively and significantly affects purchase intention.

Environmental Concern: Antecedents of Ecotourism Visit Intention with Time Perspective and Destination Image as Determination Variables

Environmental damage and sustainability become the center of attention along with climate change today. One of the interesting things is the change in behavior in the consumption of products categorized as "green", including in terms of choosing tourism destinations. Environmentally friendly tourism destinations or ecotourism is increasingly becoming an option for those who care about the environment. Ecotourism is also used by many countries, including travel agents, to increase their economic value or profit. This study aims to investigate how the role of Environmental Concern as antecendent of Ecoturism Visit Intention mediates the influence of Future Time perspective and Destination Image toward Ecotourism visit Intention.  This research involved 200 respondents who had visited ecotourism destinations at least twice, which was obtained using a convenience sample approach. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) which were processed using the SmartPLS 4.0 statistical package. The result shows that Future Time perspective and Destination’s Image positively impact Ecotourism Intention.   Future Time perspective and Destination’s Image also influence Ecotourism Intention indirectly through Environmental Concern as the mediating variable. As an implication, the government and travel agents improve service readiness and perception of high-value propositions to develop a better destination image.

The Role of Environmental Concern in Post-Purchase Satisfaction among Green Car Owners in Malaysia

Sustainable development refers to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It takes into consideration the economic, social and environmental aspects of development. Investing in renewable energy sources is the main element in sustainable development. It reduces the dependence on fossil fuels and decreases greenhouse gas emissions, thus reducing climate change's impact. Hence, promoting sustainable development through educating the public is essential. With 90 per cent of its vehicles being fossil-fueled, Malaysia needs to catch up in its aspiration to adopt green transportation. This study looks into the mediating effect of environmental concern on the relationship between social influence and prices of the green car on the post-purchase satisfaction of green car owners in Malaysia. Education and awareness campaigns play a significant role in promoting sustainable development. The domain of study is marketing, with post-purchase satisfaction as the central idea. It is a quantitative study based on the deductive research approach. This study chose the Theory of Planned Behaviour as its underpinning theory. The sampling technique adopted would be stratified random sampling via a self-constructed questionnaire. It will collect data from 384 respondents using a questionnaire and analyse it statistically using the SPSS and SmartPLS statistical tools.

Self-Image and Green Buying Intentions among University Students: The Role of Environmental Concern and Social Influence

ABSTRACT The current study presents a research model that elucidates the mechanism through which self-image influences green buying intentions among university students. Little is known about these mechanisms as well as the circumstances under which any such effects are strengthened or weakened. This study attempted to fill this void by investigating how environmental concern serves as an explanatory mechanism for the relationship between self-image and green buying intention, with social influence moderating this relationship. Based on survey data from 384 university students, environmental concern mediated the impact of self-image on green buying intention, and social influence had a conditional effect on self-image, environmental concern, and green buying intention. The findings also indicate that social influence moderated the indirect effect of self-image on green buying intention through environmental concern, with the indirect effect being stronger when social influence was low versus when it was high. These results add to the body of knowledge and provide new insights into theory and practice. The practical implications and future research directions are also discussed.

Can Environmental Knowledge and Risk Perception Make a Difference? The Role of Environmental Concern and Pro-Environmental Behavior in Fostering Sustainable Consumption Behavior

Sustainable consumption is one of the goals of the ‘Sustainable Development Goals 2030′ set by the United Nations. The study is primarily interested in how sustainable consumption behavior can be fostered through environmental knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. For environmental concern, the role of environmental knowledge is considered significant. Therefore, academia is powered by the desire to impart environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviors to students for sustainable consumption. The main purpose of this study was to measure the influence of environmental knowledge and environmental risk perceptions on the environmental concerns of university students. Likewise, how environmental attitudes act as a moderator in the association between environmental concern and pro-environmental behavior was also taken into account. The unit of analysis was the students enrolled in the universities of China. Following a deductive approach and positivist paradigm, and using SmartPLS, we deployed a structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique to test the relationships. The results exhibited that environmental knowledge and environmental risk perceptions are positively and significantly related with environmental concerns. Similarly, environmental concerns and pro-environmental behavior are positively and significantly related to sustainable consumption behavior. Environmental attitude appeared as a moderator in the relationship between environmental concerns and pro-environmental behavior. The theory of planned behavior was considered as the supporting theory for the investigated model, thereby providing empirical evidence for the theory. The study provided important implications and future directions.

Young Muslim consumers’ attitude towards green plastic products: the role of environmental concern, knowledge of the environment and religiosity

PurposeEnvironmental pollution due to the enormous usage of conventional plastic products has alerted consumers to change their attitude towards green plastic products. This study aims to examine the effects of environmental concern, knowledge of the environment and religiosity on young Muslim consumers’ attitude towards green plastic products in Indonesia. Additionally, the moderating role of gender on these relationships is investigated.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was used as a method of data collection. Data gathered from 231 young Muslim consumers in Bandung, Indonesia, was analysed via the partial least squares-structural equation modelling approach.FindingsThe results revealed that environmental concern is the factor that has the biggest impact on consumers’ attitude and behavioural intentions, both directly and indirectly. This research implies that as a young Muslim’s concern for the environment grows, his or her attitude towards the environment improves, leading them to purchase and endorse green plastic products.Practical implicationsGreen plastic product managers should increase the environmental concern of young Muslim consumers through effective marketing communication strategies and green education programs to disseminate a positive message that green plastic products consumption aids in making the environment safe and healthy.Originality/valueThis empirical study is imperative for green managers to improve their capabilities in boosting young Muslim consumers’ attitude towards green plastic products through strengthening consumers’ environmental concern, knowledge of the environment and religiosity towards supporting the sustainable development goals.

Residents' waste mobile recycling planned behavior model: the role of environmental concern and risk perception

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to investigate the relationships of environmental concern and risk perception with residents' waste mobile recycling behavior in the scenario of continuously increasing electronic waste (aka e-waste) around the world.Design/methodology/approachFor empirically testing proposed research model, this study utilized convenience sampling strategy and collected 346 responses from residents in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) through an online survey. The hypotheses were tested utilizing the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework through Mplus 7.0 program (Muthen and Muthen, 1998–2012). Robust maximum likelihood (MLR) was used as the method of estimation.FindingsThe results revealed that environmental concern is positively associated with individuals' intentions to recycle waste mobile phones and that the relationship between concern for the environment and individuals' intention to recycle is mediated by the factors such as individuals' mobile phone recycling attitude and subjective norms. The results further indicated that individuals' information security risk perception moderates the relationship between individuals' intention for recycling and subsequent recycling behavior.Originality/valueThis study provides substantial theoretical and practical implications for residents' e-waste recycling behavior while considering their environmental concern and information security risk perceptions.

Energy saving behaviours of middle class households in Ghana, Peru and the Philippines

Demand-side management of energy seeks to foster energy efficiency investments and curtailment behaviour in households. The role of environmental concern and knowledge for both types of energy saving behaviour has hardly been investigated in middle income countries with growing middle classes and rising electricity demand. Drawing on unique household survey data from Ghana, Peru and the Philippines, this paper analyses the links from individual motivation to behaviour, and from behaviour to the impact on households' total electricity expenditures. We find that consumers with more environmental concern are more likely to adopt curtailment behaviours, but that concern does not influence energy efficiency investments. In turn, higher levels of environmental knowledge make households' energy efficiency investments more likely, but do not influence curtailment. Neither energy efficiency investments nor curtailment behaviours significantly impact households' electricity expenditures. Small differences between Ghana, Peru and the Philippines exist.

Are you a water saver? Discovering people's water-saving intention by extending the theory of planned behavior

Saving water is a common responsibility of all humanity, which is essential for achieving sustainable use of global water resources. The aim of this study is to discover the determinants of an individual's intention to save water. Based on the theory of planned behavior, a novel comprehensive framework has been developed by extending environmental concern, perceived risk, and information publicity. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to perform an empirical analysis with data from questionnaire of 265 residents in Jinan, the famous Chinese “Spring City”. The findings indicate that residents have a strong environmental concern and water-saving intention with mean values of 6.78 and 6.67, respectively. Attitude and information publicity are the most important antecedents of water-saving intention, followed by subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. Environmental concern and perceived risk indirectly affect the intention to save water through attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The role of environmental concern is more important than the role of perceived risk. Interestingly, a high level of information publicity may strengthen the impact of attitude on water-saving intention but weaken the impact of perceived behavioral control. This study strongly supplements current knowledge on water-saving behavior. Moreover, these findings provide insights for policymakers to motivate people to save water.

COVID-19 related policies: The role of environmental concern in understanding citizens’ preferences

COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented health and economic crisis worldwide. Many governments of the world have accelerated an adoption of public policies to address this crisis; however, a trade-off between the economy and public health exists. Previous studies in this area have mainly focused on the impact of COVID-19 on human life and the environment. This work adds to the literature by analyzing how individual environmental concern can affect citizens' preferences for public policies that deal with COVID-19. A data set of 26,131 participants from 26 countries was used to test the research model. Results indicate that environmental concern is positively associated with a preference for long-term oriented altruistic policies, and it shapes the relationship between economic and health problems at the country level on our dependent variable. Specifically, as the level of environmental concern increases, the negative effect of COVID-19's economic problems on the preference for long-term altruistic policies is diminished. In turn, in the case of health problems, the impact on the preference for long-term altruistic policies increases as environmental concern increases. Also, both individual-level and country-level characteristics affect citizens' preferences for policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The role of environmental concern in forming intentions for switching to electric scooters

Despite the growing market share of electric scooter-style motorcycles (e-scooters), only limited insight into the role of environmental concern with respect to their adoption is available. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological and contextual factors that associate with a switch from fossil fuel scooters to e-scooters. To model these factors, we conducted two studies in Taiwan. In Study 1, we elicited context-specific reasons for and against purchasing an e-scooter in a series of semi-structured interviews. In Study 2, we analyzed data from a survey among consumers (N = 320) using structural equation modelling. We consider the most important reasons from Study 1 together with environmental concerns (egoistic, altruistic, biospheric) in their relationship with intentions to switch to an e-scooter using the framework of Behavioral Reasoning Theory (BRT). In doing so, we provide unique insights for marketers and policymakers who seek to encourage the switch to this more sustainable form of mobility. We found environmental concerns among users of fossil-fueled scooters to be associated with attitude toward as well as reasons for and against switching to an e-scooter. But only a biospheric concern appeared to relate to both reason types and attitude, whereas egoistic and altruistic concerns only associated with reasons for the switch. The study also provides researchers and marketers in the e-scooter industry with a framework for understanding the role of environmental concern and contextual factors on purchase intention for a sustainable mobility product.

“Is Sharing Really Caring?”: The Role of Environmental Concern and Trust Reflecting Usage Intention of “Station-Based” and “Free-Floating”—Carsharing Business Models

Global use of carsharing has increased. The dominant model is station-based carsharing, but free-floating providers are continuously increasing their businesses volumes. Carsharing customers have been described as environmentally conscious with a high preference for mobility providers who show responsibility and trustworthiness. This generalization of usage determinants appears to be questionable given the background of current market developments. Existing research in the area is lacking a context-sensitive view of the antecedents of potential carsharing usage. Do environmental concerns and trust have similar effects on usage intention of carsharing, when free-floating providers implement business models that are more flexible, digital, and sophisticated? Using a standardized online survey, this study paper applied a framework adapted from the Theory of Planned Behavior (ToPB) that included the constructs of trust and environmental concern. The focus was on Share Now and Stadtmobil, which are the largest free-floating and station-based providers, respectively, in Germany. Using structural equation modeling, the study explored potential perception differences between both business models among German consumers. Although not significant, results indicate slightly higher total effects of environmental concern and initial trust on the usage intention of station-based compared to free-floating carsharing. Depending on the type of carsharing, different priorities should be set in the respective business model.

Impact of Consumer Environmental Responsibility on Green Consumption Behavior in China: The Role of Environmental Concern and Price Sensitivity

Research on influence factors for green consumption has greatly advanced in recent years. However, little research has explored the effect of consumers’ environmental responsibility on green consumption and how this effect was mediated by environmental concern and moderated by price sensitivity, especially when consumers simultaneously pay close attention to environmental and personal interests. This study investigates the impact of environmental responsibility on green consumption via the mediation of environmental concern and the moderation of price sensitivity. The questionnaire survey method was used to collect data from 680 Chinese consumers via an online questionnaire. The empirical results reveal that environmental responsibility can promote environmental concern and enhance green consumption. Specifically, environmental responsibility has a positive impact on environmental concern and also has different positive effects on green consumption intention. Environmental concern positively affects green consumption intention and plays a partial mediation role in the relationship between environmental responsibility and green consumption intention. Price sensitivity plays a negative moderation role in the relationship among environmental responsibility, environmental concern and green consumption intention. The theoretical and managerial implications of the findings were discussed.

The role of environmental concern in the public acceptance of autonomous electric vehicles: A survey from China

The development of electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) has made great progress and been expected to play an important role in a future transport system. Some researchers have explored the potential impacts of autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs), while few have focused on the public attitude towards AEVs. This paper aims to understand the public acceptance of AEVs through the application of Technology Acceptance Model. Considering the potential environmental benefits of AEVs, this study concentrates on how environmental concern affects AEVs acceptance. Data is collected from an online survey in China and analyzed by a structural model. The results indicate that green perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and environmental concern have a positive relationship with people’s intentions to use AEVs. Environmental concern poses a powerful indirect effect on using intention through mediating effects. Implications for improving the public acceptance of AEVs and suggestions for further research are given correspondingly in this study.

Motivations behind Consumers’ Organic Menu Choices: The Role of Environmental Concern, Social Value, and Health Consciousness

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to examine underlying motivations of consumers’ intention to visit a restaurant featuring organic menu items and willingness to pay (WTP) for organic menu items. In particular, this study incorporated environmental concerns, social value, and health consciousness as key motivators. An online survey was conducted with a self-administered questionnaire, and a total of 473 responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that environmental concern was the strongest predictor of WTP, followed by social value and health consciousness, whereas health consciousness was the most influential factor on intention to visit, followed by social value and environmental concern.

An Examination of Locally Sourced Restaurant Patronage Intention

ABSTRACTThis study proposed a comprehensive model to explain how electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and environmental concern influence on customers’ intention to visit a locally sourced restaurant. The proposed research model was built upon the model of goal-direct behavior (MGB) and extended by incorporating eWOM and environmental concern. The results indicated that environmental concern positively influences desire through affecting attitude toward visiting a locally sourced restaurant. In addition, eWOM positively influences customers’ intention directly and indirectly through predictive variables of the MGB. This study contributed to extend the MGB by revealing the role of environmental concern and eWOM within the model. In addition, managerial implications were discussed in regards to developing effective marketing strategies in locally sourced restaurants.
